Asparagus

Tomorrow on my regular CTV appearance on the Noon News, I’ll be making a recipe that is a tribute to one of our first local vegetable crops…asparagus in a Risotto Primavera from my book 125 Best Casseroles & One-Pot Meals (Robert Rose publisher). A trip to my favourite asparagus farm owned by Tim Barrie proved to be a delightful surprise because so much more than asparagus is available there now! Now called Barrie Brothers Local Food Store, it is now located in his house at 1236 Kings Road and offers a huge range of locally grown and made products. There are soup bases that include their own home grown vegetables, pickled asparagus, crackers made from a local mill’s flour, locally grown greenhouse tomatoes as well as delicous tomato salsa, asparagus pasta and tortillas, local Cheddar, chocolates, eggs, ice cream, homemade pies, tarts and even a room of local pottery. The list is endless, but everything is sourced from nearby quality growers or producers. Check out the website www.barriebrothers.com for a full list of products.
